This isn't to say that a poorly designed website won't get good rankings, but it certainly could deter the website's performance in the long run.

Alternate text is another tool to use when linking to other content, or even when putting images into a website. Alternative text is what is displayed when a mouse hovers over a link or an image. This is usually used to help the reader understand what they are interfacing with, but is also read by search engines to help tag content in a website and to determine the overall subject being discussed.

A newer aspect to consider is the sitemap. A sitemap is basically an index page that lists all of the pages that a reader can see. It is primarily for search engines, however, as it can update to show new pages and let search engines know when they should look for new content. This is much easier than letting nature take its course and getting recognition months down the road instead of days.
