Adult Acne: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

By Alexander Chase

Everyone knows that acne is a teenage problem, right? Unfortunately, that's not true. Many adults suffer from acne as well. It's called adult acne. Adult acne will affect about 80 percent of all adults in their twenties and thirties, especially women. In fact, this is a huge problem among women mainly because they are statistically more likely to suffer from adult acne than men. The cause of adult acne and teen acne is essentially the same, but what triggers adult acne, often, is different. So, let's look at the causes of adult acne and how to treat it naturally.

Reasons For Adult Acne

If you are dealing with adult acne, no doubt you are wondering what actually actually triggers it. Here are just a few of the causes of adult acne.

The Hormone Connection - First of all, you'll find that there is definitely a hormone connection to adult acne when it comes to women. Many adult women end up dealing with adult acne as a result of fluctuations in hormones. This can occur as women go through their menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, and even when women go off their birth control pills.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome - Another cause of adult acne in women is polycystic ovarian syndrome. This is a hormonal disorder where male hormones are produced in larger amounts than normal. Because of the hormonal imbalances that are caused by this condition, Acne is a common symptom.

Chemicals and Medications -- chemicals and medications can also cause adult acne. In fact, there are various medications, drugs containing iodine, lithium, and rifampin, that can cause acne in adults. Some chemicals, such as chlorine, can also trigger acne.

Friction and Pressure - In some cases, friction or pressure to the skin can also cause adult acne to breakout as well. Often it occurs where backpack or purse straps chaff the skin or even where something is held against the face, such as a violin.

Holistic Treatment of Adult Acne

If you are suffering from adult acne, treating it holistically is often your best bet. Certainly, there are legions of acne medications available on the market, but many have pesky side effects, and others can cause additional troubles. With so many side effects and other bothersome issues, it's no wonder holistic remedies have gain in popularity in recent years. Holistic regiments can include eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water -- Drinking 8-10 glasses of water, eating legumes and other low-glycemic foods, taking herbal supplements, like chlorophyll and echinacea, and vitamin supplements, like A, C, B, and D can make a big difference. - 15359
