Going camping? Well, don't forget the glow sticks!

By Jim Busby

Glow sticks are a fun addition to your camping preparation kit. They're safe and long lasting; plus they're convenient for taking along on romantic, moonlight walks and midnight runs to the bathroom.

Planning a camping trip this summer? Don't forget the glow sticks. Aside from being just plain fun to use, glow sticks have several distinct advantages over lanterns and flashlights.

Glow sticks are easy to carry (there's a handy string attached so you can loop them around your wrist); they're dependable and long lasting. There's no knobs to twiddle or switches to struggle with. Just activate them and they're "good to go" (with a bright, powerful glow) for hours! Some of the larger ones last 12 hours or more.

They never need batteries or replacement bulbs - and you know what a pain finding the right-size bulbs for your flashlight can be! Not to mention all those batteries that wear down so quickly. And glow sticks don't require matches or starter fuel. Just bend them and shake gently to activate (the bending snaps a little glass tube within and shaking mixes the two chemicals together to cause a reaction that results in the glow)

Glow sticks come in all sorts of colors and sizes. You can get all one color so nobody argues over who's got the prettier color or you can color code each kid so you know at a glance where each of them is. Or you can mix and match.

Another good thing is that they don't emit heat - so they're safe for young kids to use. And, best of all, no flame; that's a big plus, considering the concerns over forest fires in the dry summer weather.

What's more, they're waterproof! You can drop them in the stream without worrying that they'll go out. In fact, you can even bring them in with you when you go swimming in the pond or favorite swimming hole - not that you would ever go swimming unattended at night, of course! They're even fun to use in the pool - toss a few glow stick into the water and have the kids dive and retrieve them.

Whatever you use them for, glow sticks add a touch of safe, colorful fun to your camping trip, beach party or weekend getaway! Just be sure you've got plenty of 'em to go around, so everybody can have one.
