Fireplace Design for Your Home

If you are thinking of remodeling or are getting ready to build a new home, this is your chance to design your own fireplace. It's the centerpiece of your home, so why not take the opportunity to design it to your liking. There are lots of things to consider in the design, so make sure you take the time to get it right before you start construction.

The first design decision that goes into your fireplace is both an aesthetic and practical one. How do you design the hearth? You can design the hearth to be raised, so that the fire stands up in the room, or you may decide for the more traditional fireplace at floor level. Whether you have kids or pets can certainly factor into the design decision, as well.

How big should the firebox be is a good second question to ask when designing your fireplace. A small firebox gives you a more quaint and cozy feeling, perfect for curling up in front of with a good book. Or, you may opt for a larger firebox, that will give you the space to build large fires and let your fire breathe. It also gives you room to work on your fire. The size should complement the room.

Now you have to make a choice on the materials for your fireplace. It's okay, you don't have to use the red brick and white mantel, if you don't want to. There are lots and lots of great materials for fireplacesthese days, you can certianly find something that is consistent with the other materials in your home. Choose the materials well and you will have a design you will really enjoy.

Other than this basic component, you'll need to decide on the mantel and surrounds. You can paint your fireplace or install mounts for many different types of decorating schemes to make your fireplace something truly unique. So have fun with it and don't be afraid to try new things.
